Common Risk Factors Include
- Being overweight or obese
- Sedentary lifestyle or fairly inactive
- History of gestational diabetes or had a baby that weighed more than 9 pounds
- High blood pressure
- Family history of diabetes (parent, brother, sister have been diagnosed with diabetes)
- Belonging to the following ethnic groups: African American, Latino/Hispanic American, American Indian, and Asia American
- Usually associated with age greater than 45 years however recent studies suggest that African American, American Indian, and Hispanic/Latino American children/ adolescents are being diagnosed more frequently with type 2 diabetes
- Previously identified impaired glucose tolerance by your doctor
